Overloaded and/or damaged storage racking and shelving can collapse, causing serious injuries to employees. Employees can also be injured if they are struck by objects falling off shelving.

Getting started

Maintain racking systems in good condition. Repair or replace damaged shelves and racks.​

Display the manufacturer's specified safe working load (SWL) on racking and shelving. Know the weight limit for mezzanine floors if they are used for storage.

Make sure the total weight is even and stable, and doesn't exceed the specified SWL.​

Provide safe access to and in storage areas.
